How fast we walk apparently determines how long we live. The faster our pace, the longer we live. This pace refers to our regular speed of walking which we take sub-consciously when we are walking at leisure. This pace is not about our walking velocity in trying to catch up with someone or when we are in walkathon.
Studies have proven that people who walk faster are healthier than their slower walking counterparts. Walking pace is a perfect reflection of our physical fitness. When we walk, we need to have most of all a perfect balance. On top of that, we need to have strong and agile muscles.
Our sense of coordination and joint position need to be well timed. Our bones need to be strong. Our joints need to be perfectly mobile and well lubricated. Our lungs and breathing needs to be sufficient to supply oxygen.
Our heart need to be pumping efficiently. Other than that, we need to have the correct weight, enough rate of metabolism to supply energy, good eyesight, acute hearing and last but not least a motivated mind. The list go on.
What happens when our walking pace start to get slower? This is usually due to diminished strength and stamina or due to excess weight. It could be due to muscles and joints pain or afraid of tripping and falling over. It could be due to getting tired easily and may be simply due to plain lazy mind.
As we get older we tend to walk slower. Not because we want to be careful, but because we have to be careful. All the flexibilities, coordination and reflexes have gone down. It is a sure signs that our health is deteriorating. This is not surprising if we look carefully at the people around us. If we are discerning enough, we will notice that some of our friends whom we have spend some times walking together, those who were always get left behind were the one who developed various chronic illnesses and eventually died first.
So, does this means if we start to walk faster now, we will live longer? Logically we would think that if we are able to walk faster than average people on the street, we must be healthier than the average. Therefore, we could be living longer than average. The question is not whether we want to walk faster but whether we are able to walk faster.
Well, now that you know the secret, try not to get left behind next time you are going for a walk with your group of friends. If you have friends who are always left behind during your group walk, be nice to them for they may leave the earth sooner than you.
