Having a healthy balance of microbiome and a good diversity is better understood now than ever before after the HUMAN MICROBIOME PROJECT. Loss of this diversity and balance is linked to many of the modern diseases including both Type 1& 2 Diabetes, Atherosclerosis, Brain Disorders ranging from Dementia to Alzeimer’s . Let’s understand that mutual existence is very important to enjoy good health and the Microbiota should be considered as an organ by itself and not just bugs within us .
For every one cell we have in our body , there are 10 microbial cells and they outnumber us by the number of genes as well. Hence we are a minority within us . However little attention is paid to these masters of orchestra who decide largely our health and disease.
Differentiating the gut bacteria into good and bad bacteria seems to less relevant compared to having the correct species and diversity. For example some of the pathogenic bacteria like Clostridum difficile is seen in 60 -70 of the newborns .However, they become pathogenic when they outnumber the non pathogenic bugs.
The Human Microbiome Project has identified 2 main family of Microbiomes : Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes . Firmicutes have an appetite for fat and are good at digesting complex carbs while the Bacteroidetes limit these actions . Studies have shown that a higher F/ B ratio is associated with Obesity as well as Diabetes , hypertension , Heart disease etc.
